Like many women, I spend my life bombarded by images of fashionable trends and clothing choices. We are faced with a barrage of videos, adverts, suggestions on how to look good and be stylish, but no on ever actually explains how to be stylish. I naturally assumed that if you knew, you had the gift! The super cool gen x with their oversized blazers and pulled up socks just get it; and the rest of us make do with what’s presented to us in the High St and online.
But what if you used psychology and an in depth look at your own tones to pinpoint a personal style? A you style (or in my case, whittle down the the hoarding wardrobe full of clothes that were bought in haste/on sale/ because other people had them on and I thought they looked nice…). I’m in!
After previously learning of the feel good garment energy in my investigations into dopamine dressing, I booked a Colour Analysis in person session to see.
Colour analysis is a tool used to determine which colours flatter you most. It is a technique dispensed by a trained eye to determine the colours that best suit your unique skin tone and features. Based on your overall appearance and particularly the colouring of your eyes, hair and skin, you will be assigned a colour season. Each colour season comes with a colour palette, specifically designed to harmonize with your natural colouring. From a quick research standpoint (scrolling TikTok), I could see that you are draped with sample fabric swatches to find a perfect match to your natural tones.
I liked the idea of individuality when it came to colour selection- I’m a big believer that one size does not fit(suit) all in styling. I also liked the idea of my hair, and eye colour, two things people notice about me the most, being the influencers in the assignment.
I was pleasantly surprised by the entire process!
Firstly, I was anxiously aware of what I should wear in-case I was scolded and called an unfashionable buffoon, so I chose an old faithful brown Zara co-ord (simultaneously thinking, this isn’t very colourful), but soldiered on regardless.
I was met with 4 other women and a mentor and it was clear to see that we had different styles and colourings from the get go. Three ladies were brunette, one was blonde, and myself and the mentor, redheads.
We started with a short personality quiz, the questions were informal, multiple choice and engaging, and regular Buzzfeeder’s will light up like I did at the thought of some simple questions helping to pinpoint personality traits!
“What are your favourite type of Events? What Jewellery appeals to you most? What is your ideal way to spend a night?” These questions had a theme of A,B,C,D and you tallied up the score to find out your personality. I got a staggering 7 in the Yellow category.
Just call me mellow yellow…
Next up, was the matching of colour palette seasons.
The Four Season Palettes, are arranged in groups of temperance: Spring and Autumn are warm toned, and Winter and Summer are cool. These then take a list of colours and arrange them in the different warm and cool tones to suit you best.
Our Mentor, Mary, From Corporate and Creative Image Belfast(Linked here, you’re welcome!) explained we would we be working with 4 seasons, but some people split things into further subcategories. Here at LazyGirlsGuide we like to keep things simple though, so 4 was a welcome statement!
Getting the colour Analysis done in Belfast.
I noticed quite quickly to colours I was drawn to more. I had already fished out the trusty brown co-ord set for today, and I loved to wear greens/browns/burgundy’s/ and creams so it was quickly decided with my red hair, and green eyes that I was a True Autumn. The tones that suited me best were warm autumnal tones and prints with my colours mixed in.
We were given a metaphorical fashion swiss army knife to leave with after the analysis too, a pocket sized swatch chart with our colours in it, to take shopping, but personally, I matched against my already overflowing wardrobe and donated anything that didn’t fit the pallet. I don’t wear lilacs anyway…
It is best to note as well, in the rest of the class there was 3 Winters and 1 summer. Talk about 4 seasons in one day!
Love K x
